Last night I checked out my very first Cirque du Soleil show called “Zarkana,” which was honestly one of the most interesting things I have seen in a while (Is that depressing?). Basically, Cirque has taken the traditional circus and “glammed” it up with great music, crazy costumes and a classy venue… no big top here! It’s something you need to add to your social calendar.

First of all, Zarkanas’s home is at the world famous Radio City Music Hall — Talk about a perfect venue! The show begins with a woman doing some of the craziest things with tennis balls I have ever seen. Not quite as insane as the ping-pong ball scene from Priscilla Queen of the Desert… but the trick still left my mouth hanging wide open. And this was how I looked for about half of the show. From the clowns to the trapeze performers, this show had it all.

Is the show worth the money? We bought our seats through Groupon a while back and ended up only paying around $65 a seat. For that price, it was well worth it. However, I would not have been happy if I payed the full ticket price, which for $250 a piece makes me think buying a trampoline would be a better circus-related investment.

My suggestion is to check out TKTS before you go; the organization is committed to making theater and dance affordable to all. TKTS also has a great iPhone and iPad app that you can download and instantly see available shows and their respective discounts. You should also check out BroadwayBox.com if you want to grab tickets in advance and don’t want to take the risk with TKTS.

Check out the trailer for Zarkana:

Bottom line: I would definitely check this show out, just not at full price. Especially if you have kids, taking them to Zarkana is a no-brainer (I heard children laughing the entire time — what a pain! I’m kidding).
