R&B favorite [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cee Lo Green[/lastfm] pulled out of Rihanna’s tour, explaining that he wanted to focus on his host-status on “The Voice,” his upcoming book, and new studio recordings. Understandable, but it was disappointing that the two vocal powerhouses wouldn’t be touring on the same stage anymore.
Still, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rihanna[/lastfm] is a true superstar, and kept her concert last night simple, highlighting her sultry pipes without hiding behind smoke and mirrors.
After a short opening set by J.Cole, the Barbados-born diva strutted the stage in a series of shiny, colorful outfits. The set-list included all the hits, (Only Girl In the World, Disturbia,) as well as slow-burning numbers (Unfaithful, Hate that I Love You.)
Instead of focusing on over-complicated dancing and elaborate sets, Rihanna tried to connect to her fans, who are also sometimes called “The Rihanna Navy.”At one point, while singing the song “Skin,” the audience went wild as Rihanna dragged an old man onto the stage and danced all up on him, (Ha. This also has happened before…) She also walked into the crowd at one point to bang on a conveniently placed drum-set.
Green-less or no, Rihanna pulled off an epic show, relying only on her own swagger and pulling it off!
But Rihanna may be trying to leave her old self in the past; I personally would have liked to hear “SOS” and breakout hit “Pon de Replay.” Cmon, Ri Ri, don’t be embarrassed by your mid 2000 jams!!
