This Sunday is Father’s Day. DON’T WORRY! I forgot too. I’m freaking out. But you still have time to throw something together/put your siblings to shame and reign as most-loved-child for another year.
Here’s a list of last-minute gifts, because we know you’re very busy and love your dad.
1. Run to the Pharmacy
Like Starbucks, there is a pharmacy on almost every block in New York City. The ‘burbs are similarly littered with these meccas of old Easter candy. But wait! Look beyond the toothpaste aisle and unearth a number of dad-worthy gifts.
CVS sells the epically-named Philips Norelco Electric Razor 7310X, whose price ($59.99) is a bit steep but fulfills literally every shaving need a human could have: mustache trimmer, “Dynamic Contour Response,” and a two-page user manual.
Duane Reade is jumping on the eco-friendly bandwagon and has started selling a line of tree-hugging products under the label Apt. 5 Goes Green. From bamboo cutting boards to stainless steel water bottles, Apt. 5 offers guilt-free products for the crunchy granola types.
2. Gift Certificates
Ah, giftcards. Nothing says “I bought this last minute” like a hastily written card and a gift certificate to an inane store. That said, a more formalized appointment is one of the best gifts you can give.
Truman’s Gentlemen’s Groomers at 120 East 56th St. offers a manly-versions of a spa experience. The spa/club makes men feel more comfortable about the pampering by keeping Bloomberg News or sports games on the TV and a wood-paneled bar stocked with Grey Goose at all times. Especially for Father’s Day, Truman’s offers special packages that feature combinations of massages, shoe-shines, haircuts and shaves for lowered prices. Once you drag him past the front door, I promise your father won’t be disappointed.
3. DVD Sets
Amazon.com offers expediated shipping, as do most online book-movie stores. So jump online and get Dad that set of movies or TV show seasons he always wanted to catch up on. Not only is this gift actually practical, most box-sets have great looking designs as well.
– Ford at Fox (The Collection)
No one does manly and rugged like Tom Ford.
– The Hangover
The first movie will always be the best example of goofy, male-bonding and debauchery.
– The Walking Dead: Season 1
4. Nice Liquor
Good-quality booze is always a welcome gift; it’s the kind of thing anyone loves to receive but would never spend money on themselves. Just go to your local liquor store and root around behind the cheaper variations. Ask the people working at the store. A well-receptive employee can tell you the most popular brands and the newest arrivals.
Some Cheap, but Classy, Brands
– Bluecoat Gin ($22)
5. Just Bring Him Somewhere!
Material things are well and good, but sometimes shared experiences are the best way to show you care, (corny but true).
– Summerstage Festival (FREE)
City Parks Foundation brings 100+ free concerts to NYC all summer long. Getting in is tough, so offer to go early and save a spot for Dad.
– Porter House NY
Treat him to a steak and some ambiance.
– Coney Island
The boardwalk is back, with new coasters that put the Cyclone to shame.
Got some ideas of your own? Get going, quick, before Sunday sneaks up on you!
