Miley Cyrus got her early 90s grunge rock on at a recent concert when she decided to cover post-punk band Nirvana’s angst anthem, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Odd choice…
Here’s a little tidbit:
The song is older than Miley is. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nirvana[/lastfm] released ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, from their album Nevermind, in 1991. The Cyrus family released Miley in 1992.
In explanation of her musical choice, Miley credits the song and Nirvana for being the “music that inspired me and made me want to be on this stage tonight.”
Something tells me the feeling was not mutual and the late Kurt Cobain was not thinking about fallen Disney darlings when he screamed the song at the top of his lungs.
Regardless, Miley has an emotional connection to it, she told the crowd, “this song is something I always sing with my little brother who can’t be with me on tour, so this song is also for him.”
Nirvana isn’t the only rock band that you probably never heard of that Miley has covered. Check out a couple of songs that Smiles likes to play while on tour to give the parents (or grandparents!) in the room something to listen to…
