The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival begins, today! Added bonus, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Elton John[/lastfm] will be performing a concert in order to kick off the big event! Amazing. Read on to get the details and to find out what else made today’s edition of What’s Fresh Around Town.

1. The Tribeca Film Festival begins today and it’s kicking things off in style, with a free Elton John performance and screening of The Union. The screening will be taking place at the North Cove, on the Hudson River. The festival runs through May 1st. Click here for ticketing information.

2. The beloved movie classic, Sister Act, is making it’s Broadway debut tonight! Click here for tickets and additional information.

3. The Hungarian Pastry Shop on Amsterdam and 110th is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary with 50-cent pastries and coffee! Yum. The special is limited to one per person. Go and get your dessert on for cheap!

4. The legendary Spike Lee will be at Barnes and Noble in Union Square at 5PM, today. Lee will be promoting his book titled, If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise.

5. As for sports, NHL first-round playoffs for the NY Rangers start, today! The hockey team will play the Washington Capitals at 7PM, at Madison Square Garden. In baseball, the Mets continue their series against the Astros at 7:10PM!
