So what do we do when we hear alleged rumors of famous people cheating or getting cheated upon? We make an incredibly cathartic list of cheating songs from some of our favorite musical stars, naturally, like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Adele[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bon Jovi[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Justin Timberlake[/lastfm], and the blonde bombshell who was awarded with the ACM Entertainer of the Year trophy this weekend–[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Taylor Swift[/lastfm].
Come on, cry your eyes out with us… it’s OK.
20. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Script[/lastfm] – “Fall For Anything”
The tender young Irish lads of The Script warn their favorite gullible girl that she is getting into deep trouble by “cheating” herself with a cheating man:
Oh, please don’t be so naïve/Don’t wait ’till your heart bleeds/Love wasn’t built for speed, listen to me girl/He keeps f’n’ with your head, tryna get you into bed/And in the morning you’ll just hate yourself.
19. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Michael Buble[/lastfm] – “Me and Mrs. Jones”
A cover of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Billy Paul[/lastfm]’s classic, we admit to feeling a little naughty while hearing Buble sing about having an illicit relationship with a married woman, Mrs. Jones.
Hey, we’re only human and that man can sing.
18. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Adele[/lastfm] – “Rumour Has It”
From all of Adele’s songs off of 21, it seems like she’s been through the ringer with her love life and “Rumor Has It” is no exception.
With lyrics like “You’ve been telling people things that you shouldn’t be/Like when we creep out and she ain’t around/Haven’t you heard the rumours?,” it hints at Adele having an affair with a man in a relationship–who she once apparently also had a relationship with.Vodpod videos no longer available.
17. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Amy Winehouse[/lastfm] – “You Know That I’m No Good”
This song is a sexy, sultry guilty pleasure tune that makes us feel totally guilty after singing along to lyrics like “upstairs in bed, with my ex boy/He’s in a place, but I can’t get joy/Thinking on you in the final throes/This is when my buzzer goes.”
16. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bruno Mars[/lastfm] – “Grenade”
Not explicitly a song about cheating, the lyrics do hint at Mars’ unrequited, slightly violent love for someone who thinks that love is “easy come, easy go.”
15. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Bon Jovi[/lastfm] – “Damned”
Bon Jovi is one “Damned” man, sleeping in the bed of another man, with the woman he just can’t get away from. We like the incredibly poignant turn of the phrase in the lyrics:
A door slams like a shotgun, you jump up to your feet/But it’s just the wind blowing through the secrets that we keepVodpod videos no longer available.
14. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Britney Spears[/lastfm] – “Womanizer”
Britney Spears is a Femme Fatale and everyone knows that a Femme Fatale is smart. She calls the shots in love and Spears won’t be “played for a sucker” with a man who’s had “one too many” to be in a normal, loving relationship.
13. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Destiny’s Child[/lastfm] – “Say My Name”
In Destiny’s Childs’ song “Say My Name,” Beyonce and her ladies doubt the faithfulness of the man in question because he won’t “say their name.”
We’d think it was kind of shady if our man wasn’t calling us baby either–especially if he said everything to us two times before. Very perceptive, Destiny’s Child. Very perceptive.
12. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Justin Timberlake[/lastfm] – “Cry Me A River”
This song always makes our eyes well up with tears, because we just can’t imagine anyone breaking the heart of the always adorable Justin Timberlake. Especially with what he is learning from the man his lover was stepping out on him with:
You don’t have to say, what you did/I already know, I found out from him
11. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rihanna[/lastfm] – “Unfaithful”
This song is probably Rihanna’s best ballad and it’s completely believable that she would be put in this position. It’s also a fresh take from the eyes of a cheating woman rather than just another tortured love song from a woman who was cheated on.
10. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm] – “Thinking of You”
Another song by a beautiful cheating woman with lots of regret, Katy Perry plaintively croons “He kissed my lips/I taste your mouth/He pulled me in/I was disgusted with myself” and looks gorgeous doing it.
9. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Taylor Swift[/lastfm] – “Should’ve Said No”
Taylor Swift has previously said that she writes all her songs based on some real-life love story so with lyrics like “You should’ve said no, you should’ve gone home/You should’ve thought twice before you let it all go/You should’ve know that word, bout what you did with her/Would get back to me,” we are wondering who messed with Tay Tay in the baddest of ways.Vodpod videos no longer available.
8. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blu Cantrell[/lastfm] – ” Hit ‘Em Up Style”
We forgot about this hit from 2001 and how amazing the message is–if your man is cheating on you, just spend all his money to get back with him. Take your friends on a shopping spree! Everything goes! From the crib to the ride to the clothes!
7. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Melanie Fiona[/lastfm] – “It Kills Me”
A classic tale of co-dependency, Fiona sings a heart-wrenching story we all understand:
I know you messing around, but who the hell else is gonna hold me down/Ooooh/I gotta be out my mind to think it’s gonna work this time/A part of me wants to leave, but the other side still believes/And it kills me to know how much I really love you.
6. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Beyonce[/lastfm] – “Irreplaceable”
An inspirational song, to say the least, Beyonce handles being cheated on with humor and grace, simply instructing her man that all his stuff to the left. He can grab it and leave. Preferably, to the left. To the left.
5. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mariah Carey[/lastfm] – “One And Only”
Players gonna play, which Mariah Carey laments when she sings “you’re currently engaged/In an intimate conversation/With a young groupie or two/They say ‘players only love you when they’re playing games.'”Vodpod videos no longer available.
4. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jewel[/lastfm] – “‘Til It Feels Like Cheating”
Not technically a “cheating” song, Jewel is singing to her lover that she never sees that she wants to make love with him “til it feels like cheating.” So, she is essentially saying she that the guilt of getting caught makes the act of making love much more exciting.
3. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Christina Perri[/lastfm] – “Jar of Hearts”
Perri’s man is “running around leaving scars/Collecting your jar of hearts/And tearing love apart.” Thankfully, Perri is smart enough not to take her man back again. Been there, over that, you go girl.
2. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jazmine Sullivan[/lastfm] – “Bust Your Windows”
Probably our favorite song about vindication, we listen to Jazmine Sullivan’s rousing tune “Bust Your Windows” on the regular whenever we feel like anyone in our life is giving us trouble, let alone a significant other.
The act of busting out someone’s windows is childish and insane which is why we like living it out through the lyrics of Sullivan instead of going to jail.
1. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Carrie Underwood[/lastfm] – “Before He Cheats”
Last but not least, we’ve got Carrie Underwood’s emotive country ballad “Before He Cheats.” Underwood goes over the whole scenario of what her cheating lover might be doing. And Underwood actually one up’s Sullivan with the car destruction:
No…not on me/’Cause I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive/carved my name into his leather seats…/I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights/slashed a hole in all 4 tires…/Maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats.
What we’ve learned from all this: Never mess with a pop star unless you want them to trash your car, spend all your money, and write a song about it.
