Last night, the Idol contestants had to sing a song from the year they were born. Let’s begin with my picks for standout performances last night…

First, Casey Abrams, he took a big risk singing a Nirvana song…not the best rendition but definitely entertaining. Casey brings that element of surprise to the show . He is fearless and his passion for his craft shows every time he hits the stage.

Second, Pia Toscano, performed an updated and upbeat version of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Whitney Houston[/lastfm]‘s “Where do Broken Hearts Go” hands down for me the best performance of the night .

Keep your eyes on this New Yorker… Pia is a Star!

Next, James Durbin, sang I’ll be there for you by Bon Jovi.

All I have to say is… smart move, James. [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bon Jovi[/lastfm] sung well is always a crowd favorite and you did just that. James definitely possessed the swagger of a rocker last night. James, in the words of Steven Tyler “Don’t get too Poppy on Me”. If Durbin makes it to the finale looks like Tyler will be joining him on stage; I look forward to that performance.

Finally, Jacob Lusk, the guy with those powerhouse gospel pipes, closed the show with his take on Heart’s “Alone”.

Jacob, stepped out of his comfort zone and took a chance singing a rock song; but it paid off. He definitely put the “Lusky Stank” on it and made his own.

As for Stefano, Scott and Lauran: I think their performances last night will keep them safe another week. In jeopardy of being in the bottom three: Naima – I’m still gunning for her, Thia, Paul, please see a [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Kenny Loggins[/lastfm] song already. Haley, I know the red lipstick and Karen.

Here’s the song list from the Top 12 performance show:

Naima Adedapo – “What’s Love Got To Do With It” by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Tina Turner[/lastfm]
Paul McDonald – “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Elton John[/lastfm]
Thia Megia – “Colors Of The Wind” by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Vanessa Williams[/lastfm]
James Durbin – “I’ll Be There For You” by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bon Jovi[/lastfm]
